Character limits for LinkedIn, Instagram, Threads, Bluesky and X in 2026
LinkedIn posts can be 3,000 characters, Instagram captions 2,200, Threads posts 500, Bluesky posts 300 and X posts 280. The table below has each limit, where your post gets cut off behind "more", and the quirks in how each platform counts.
The limits at a glance

|---|---|---|---|

| 2,200 characters | About 125 | Hashtags and line breaks count | |
| Threads | 500 characters | The whole post | A text attachment can add up to 10,000 more |
| Bluesky | 300 characters | The whole post | Each emoji counts as one; posts are also capped at 3,000 bytes |
| X | 280 characters, or 25,000 with Premium | 280, then "Show more" | Each link counts as 23; emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2 |

How X counts characters
X does not count every character the same way. Letters, numbers and punctuation from Latin alphabets count as one, and so do Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Hebrew letters. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two, and so does any emoji, however many parts it is built from. Every link counts as 23 characters whether it is short or very long, because X shortens links for you.
That is why a post can look short and still not fit: three emoji and two links use up 52 of your 280 characters before you have written a word.
Write for the cut-off
On LinkedIn and Instagram most people see only the first line or two before "more". Put the point of the post in the first 125 characters, and keep hashtags and links further down.
Check a post before you publish
Gren shows every limit as you write. Open the Stats panel and expand Post limits: each platform shows how many characters are left, and turns red when you are over. Select a paragraph to count just that part, which helps when you are trimming one section of a longer post.
Gren counts the way each platform does: links as 23 and emoji as 2 for X, and emoji as one for Bluesky. For LinkedIn, Instagram and Threads it counts an emoji as two, to be safe. It also ignores spaces and blank lines at the very start and end of a post, which platforms drop when you publish.
Questions
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes, on every platform here. Each space and each line break is one character.
Do emoji count as one character or two?
It depends where you post. X counts every emoji as two and Bluesky counts each one as one. Other platforms vary, so Gren counts an emoji as two for them, which keeps you on the safe side.
Do links count towards the limit?
On X, every link counts as 23 characters. On the other platforms a link usually counts as the characters you see, so a long one uses up more of the limit.
What is the longest post you can write on X?
280 characters, or 25,000 with an X Premium subscription. Posts over 280 characters are shown with a Show more link.
How many characters show before "more" on LinkedIn?
About 140 on a phone and 210 on a computer. The exact point depends on line breaks and the width of the screen.
